Ive been hibernating

Mama bear has spent the last couple months tucked away and hibernating, trying to avoid the cold weather and spending some much needed time with the family. Throughout the months of December and January, I do very little if any shoots and try to focus on the holidays and revamping for the new year. Most people here in Utah dont like to venture out in the freezing temperature to get photos done either so it works great both ways. With that said, I have been itchen to get back in the swing of things and get my creative juices flowen. I feel like my "winter break" gives me a chance to unwind, refocus and rest but I know if it lasts to long I find myself in a rutt and I always like to keep it fresh and new. So last week I styled a little shoot for my sister with the intentions of really capturing her beauty and glamour!! It is however a surprise for her hubbys up coming birthday so I can only share one for now but if you come back shortly I will reveal more from her session and trust me...it wont disappoint.

To say I have neglected my blog the past couple months would be a total understatement!!! I always try to minimize my work load when my kids are out of school, and this summer was no exception. But today 3 out of the 5 kiddos headed back to school and in 2 weeks, our oldest will be back to school as well. So what better commemorate the first day of school than with a blog post... wooohooo!!!
It may be short and sweet but at least im getten my feet wet again.

Finally a full post... woohoo!!
I am so thankful for my dear friend Dawn who allowed me to use her new little one to get some much needed practice of newborn photography. Newborns are a whole different ball game when it comes to photography!! It takes enormous amounts of practice, skill and patience... of which I'm still trying to master. I have a long ways to go when it comes to newborns but with a sister and a sister-in-law both expecting in the near future, I'm very excited to have a few more little test subjects to get my hands on!!!

This was one windy day... but I guess I cant complain because there has been rain and snow pretty much every day since. Brittany was so fun to shoot and I just think she is the sweetest girl ever. ....what is it holiday time again? End of november till the first of january always seem to slow me down when it comes to blogging and this year has taken the same route. Between thanksgiving, Christmas shopping, decorating, birthdays, playing in the with my kids, partys and what not, there just is not enough time in the day!! I really do have a TON a fabulous families, kids, babies, seniors and brides & grooms to share but all in do time I guess. I usually try to avoid direct sun light at all cost while photographing a session but on this occasion the light seemed to be absolutely gorgeous as it hit the golden weeds and my subject. To be honest only a few shots in this particular set-up actually worked----but the ones that did are amazing! More of little B's mini-session coming soon.

Back in April, I shot Carson's senior pictures... I know, I'm a total slacker but what can I say?! Carson was just amazing to photographer- fun, outgoing, darling as can be and super talented. Baseball, hockey, guitar, dirt bikes- he does it all. We tried to incorporate as much as his daily life into his session and I absolutely love the results.

For the past 2 weeks my computers internet has not been working thanks to my wonderful children!!! Luckily I have had internet access via my laptop but I do not use that for any photography related "stuff". So, everything is fixed and we are ready to start blogging once again. I have nearly a dozen sessions to post and my goal is to post daily until I am all caught up... but don't hold me to that :)

I know... I'm a total blog slacker! Why do I find myself repeating this statement quite often on this blog? Summer break is in full force and I have found little time and/or desire to sit at my computer, thus the lack of posts. I shoot a very limited number of sessions once my kids are out of school so my need to blog has been minimal- other than playing catch up, which I still need to do! I have already completed several "around the house" projects (pictures on that coming soon) and have spent some much needed quality time with the kids going to the pool and dinosaur park, playing baseball, watching movies, playing board games and just being together- and if you can believe it, for once, ALL my laundry is done!!! This yucky weather has hindered our fun a bit but we are still enjoying the lazy days of summer!!!

Can I just say "I love this session!!!" Although we were eaten alive by bugs and blown away by the wind, this session turned out to be A-mazing!!! I left this shoot looking like I had a horrible case of the chicken pox and am still itching but I wouldnt trade it for all the gorgeous images we got. This rodeo queen sure does know how to work the camera and it was such an honor to be the lucky photographer to capture her beauty. And if I were a betten kinda gal, Id say your looken at the next Miss Rodeo Utah!!!

Let me first say that seniors are probably my most favorite subjects to photograph. And then when I get a senior as photogenic as Stephanie... well, it makes my job all that much more enjoyable :) Although we had to brave the somewhat yucky, weedy, dirty locations at which we shot at, oh and not to mention a pretty fierce attack dog, we ended up with some of the most incredible images that I could have hoped for. Thus the long post, but sorry, to many beautiful pictures to choose from.

Stephanie, it was such a honor to work with you and I wish you all the luck and success as graduate and move forward in life :)

If you are looking to have a session shot prior to August/September, now is the time to schedule!!! I am completely booked for April and June. I take the month of July and the first part of August off to do a little R&R and play with kids, so that only leaves a few sessions open in May. I will also be announcing a "MAY MINI-SHOOT" at a pretty awesome location so check back for that to be posted soon. May is actually such a great time of year to do a shoot here in Utah since the weather is so unpredictable in April and just to darn hot in summer!!!

I have to say, that I truly do love my clients but.... they don't always love me back!! And such is the case with this little guy. "A" would not crack a smile to save his life. He was as sober as they come. I don't think he liked me too much and he certainly didn't think I was all that funny. By the end, mom and auntie did get a few laughs out of him with a game of hide and seek :)

Well, its that time of year when my seniors come out in full force... and I totally love it!!! With graduation less than 3 months away, it is now or never to get those Senior Portraits taken :) Chelsey was so fun to photographer and such a natural in front of the camera. She will not only be graduating from high school but also from WSU with her associates. Aside from the beauty and smarts, she also is on the tennis team and plays the Saxs... busy girl.

This little man is as sweet as he is cute!!! Considering it was a tad bit chilly out, M was such a good boy for his birthday pictures and made my job so easy. I just love when it when my little subjects cooperate and enjoy themselves as much as I do. We got so many great shots, I had such a hard time choosing which to post. Mom and Dad jumped in for a couple shots and now you can see where M got his good looks from... what a gorgeous family! Thanks guys :)

Here is part 2 of Candice and Brents Groomal shoot... Fabulous, right? I absolutely love the idea of groomals for several reasons. The first being that it eliminates so much stress for the couple on the actual wedding day. Second, it gives the couple a chance to have some wonderful photos to display at the wedding and reception. Part 1:
It is always a pleasure to photograph brides but when they are this beautiful it makes my job that much more enjoyable. Not only was Candice stunning but she was also such a trooper when it came time to brave the elements. Although it wasn't actually snowing, there was plenty of snow on the ground and the cold wind was blowing just enough to make the frigged air a bit more chilly. She was such a sport to stomp through the snow and do whatever I asked of her.... all to capture beautiful images... mission accomplished!!

round two... studio lighting

Morgan is always so gracious when Im in need of a beautiful face to photograph. I think we usually spend more time laughing and being silly than we do working and taking pictures and this time was no exception. I spent another afternoon trying out my "lighting skills" or my lack there of. Unfortunately, Ive come to the conclusion that a absolutely HATE the lights I currently have so, today I ordered me the fabulous set up that I used at my last workshop {rock that OCF}. I am hoping they will make this whole process much easier. But for now, here are some more head shots with my current "yucky" lights. Oh, and please disregard the awful, tacky, "tie-died" backdrop. Thats hitten the trash as soon as my new goodies arrive!

Over the course of the last year and a half, I have focused the majority of my photography style on natural and existing light. But a couple months back I had the opportunity to attend a workshop by the fabulous Ali Hohn on off camera flash. Her style is so amazing and it has truly changed my thoughts on how I want my images to be captured. Several years ago I bought some studio lighting but never really knew what the heck to do with them. So with the help on Ali and tons of reading and study from online sources, I dusted off those old lights and put them to use. My SMOKEN HOT little sis and I, set up a make shift studio in my front room and put it all to the test. Thank heavens for my gorgeous family!!!

Oh and if you are wondering were she got her fabulous hat... thats all thanks to my moms mad knitting skills-- we are trying to convince her to sell them so Ill keep you posted once they are up for grabs.
